Big Sky Map

This morning, I received a link to the following in my email:

It's a fair attempt... but not really accurate. "Militia groups" need to be further north, and the "pseudo-cowboys" are more south and east-- they tend to cluster over near Bozeman these days.

Ah, you've made my morning. What a hoot. If the happy cartographers had time on their hands they could do just such a map of the stretch of territory north of Montana too (ahem) -- thank you for this.

I don't know about the west side of the state, but us folks on the east would like to trade the mad bomber area (as most of that is on the reservation) for some of the militia groups.

I guess this makes me a macho writer then.

Every human illustration limps, I guess...

Apparently most of the religious fanatics live on reservation land, too-- while I live near obsessed environmentalists (or maybe obsessed anti-environmentalists, I'm not sure).

"Every human illustration limps," indeed. One more example that stereotypes, even when amusing, rarely fit the reality.

Thanks for stopping by!

Is that one of Roz Chast's cartoons?

That's what the signature looked like, so I went looking about-- and it is indeed one of Roz Chast's cartoons. I did not know the artist, but there are references aplenty to this particular image on the web. Thanks for asking-- I'm glad to be able to give proper credit.

You can find this and more of Chast's artwork, and even purchase prints, from the nice people at the New Yorker, here.

At least one of the 3 Montana seminarians here enjoyed this.

We have three - R is a senior, J is a middler, and K a junior. Quite a showing for one western diocese!

I have met J in person (we both met with the Standing Committee a few weeks ago, though for different reasons); and I know the other two by name, as all our seminarians are on the diocesan prayer list. Please give them my regards-- and wish R luck on the upcoming canonicals!

Well, the "mad bombers" section is wrong, too, since Ted Kaczynski was living outside Lincoln which to me looks more like what is labeled the UFO fans. 8-) And the Freemen/militia were over Jordan way.

It's funny, but just so inaccurate. *GRIN*

And I'm a Montanan in exile back east, so I know the state ;-)
