Big Manly Knives and Swords Sunday!
One of my local colleagues also took note of the event; Gary sent out the following suggestion, reprinted here with his permission:
Let's have our own Big Manly Knives and Some Swords Sunday. Just think of the cool PR. Guys could wear big hunting knives, fishing gutting knives, Bowie knives... and we could have a sword or two (probably old Knights of Columbus Stuff from RC grandfathers - maybe the Masons have some cool old swords).
This is actually cooler than guns because Big Manly Knives and Some Swords are in the Bible! We could use lectionary readings from Genesis where Abraham almost sacrifices Isaac with a Big Manly Knife! We could have a reading about Solomon getting ready to slice the baby in two with Some Sword! We could have a workshop afterward on matching the color of your knife sheath and scabbard to the liturgical colors of the season. Just think how that Big Manly Knife would look on Christmas with a white sheath and gold stitching and tassels!
We are not a sexist church so women need equal time. Of course not all women have Big Manly Knives let alone Some Swords. Rather than emphasize Judith and Holoferenes (clearly a Big Manly Knife was involved in his beheading) we could emphasize Jael and Sisera in which the latter was dispatched by the former with a Very Womanly Tent Peg. We could give away cute little tent peg necklaces and the like. Maybe we could have tent peg self defense classes!
Never a dull moment out here in Big Sky Country.

That is very, very funny.
Dude, I REALLY want a Very Womanly Tent Peg necklace. You know, for my daughter's sake...
Nuevacantora: so do I! We may have to work on that.
And doesn't "my daughter" have a lovely ring to it? (^_^)
One of the WY Presbyterian churches has a huge (3-4 ft long) Scottish Claymore hanging on the front of the pulpit. It's a memento of the trip to Scotland that some of them took a while back and, of course, a reminder of the "sword of the Lord" mentioned in Hebrews.
So much that I love about this, LOL...especially "Some Swords." And the "cute tent peg" necklace idea. ROFL!
This is just too good!
Gee. I honestly thought, when reading the post title on Revgals, that this post was about "Saint John Sunday," which was recently observed. Every year, in our somewhat stodgy, slightly gothic New England U.C.C. church, a handful of older men from the local Masonic lodge show up in dark suits with little aprons and enough bling to make any rap star jealous. A couple of the masons are from our congregation and the day clearly means a whole heck of a lot to them--I'm guessing it's a meaningful show of ecclesiastical benevolence after a history of persecution--but most of us non-masons just sit there feeling a little bored and bewildered as we look at those funny aprons and all that manly bling. They didn't exactly wave any swords, but I felt like the shriners were going to show up with fezzes and scimitars (sp?) any minute.
Anybody else have any insight into this "St. John's Sunday" weirdness? Is it related to Big Knives & Swords? They DID mention something about a head on a platter...
